The biggest mistake I see new HYROX athletes make? They think the answer is always more work.
More intensity. More reps. More miles.
Don’t get me wrong, HYROX requires a lot of work and a real willingness to get uncomfortable. But if your body doesn’t have the foundation to support that training, more work usually just means more compensation.
You can only express as much power as you can control
If you can’t breathe efficiently, stabilize your core, maintain alignment, or move with intention, adding more intensity just reinforces the weaknesses that are already there.
You see it in the back half of a race. Lunges that start to cave in. Wall balls where the breathing falls apart. A sled push where the lower back takes over because nothing else is holding the line. That isn’t a fitness problem. It’s a control problem.
That’s where Pilates comes in
Not because it’s “easy.” Not because it’s a rest day. Because it teaches the things that make great athletes great:
Control: moving with intention instead of momentum.
Stability: a trunk that holds its position when your arms and legs are working hard.
Alignment: joints stacked so force goes where you want it to go.
Breath: breathing that supports your effort instead of fighting it.
Awareness: knowing what your body is doing, especially when you’re tired.
Precision + power
When you combine that precision with strength and conditioning, you don’t just become someone who can survive hard workouts. You become someone who can perform.
That’s what SAG Fitness is all about: where the precision of Pilates meets the power of performance.
